And you and I climb, crossing the shapes of the morning And you and I reach, over the sun for the river And you and I climb, clearer, towards the movement And you and I called over valleys of endless seas
I thought he was a telepath, and would know what a terrible thing that is to do to someone.
I find that pacifism is only possible for those who are confused about the nature of violence. I don't think you can eliminate physical violence unless you do massive amounts of psychic violence. And I can't prefer the one to the other. Both can kill, and both can leave people so broken that the only reason death is not preferable is the possibility of a cure.
As for me, I'm unashamed to admit that I will destroy those who seek to destroy my people, and that I will make anyone who tries to harm Ravage die painfully. As a telepath, and an empath, I don't enjoy doing violence, so I've made a study of doing it efficiently. But the agony to which I'd subject someone who harmed my mate would not be trivial, despite its short duration. I don't leave my enemies alive to come back for me if I have any choice about that.
Ravage is the name of my spouse. When my psionic abilities came upon me late in my teens I went mad. She led me out of the labyrinth I was hiding in and taught me to focus my senses. I didn't even know what she looked like when I first fell in love with her. She was a blaze of gold and warmth and bells and sadness, splashed across the frontal portion of my brain module. I made her stop being sad, though.
The reasons for her sadness are hers alone to tell, but her life had been very hard, and loving her gave me the determination to become functional again, so that I could make things easier for her and her siblings.
Loving each other has given us happiness. We have devoted most of our lives to trying to fix a society that is either just and fair, or peaceful and orderly, but seemingly never both at once.
We've accepted that we cannot completely end the injustice in our universe, but we believe that we can make a safe place for those who wish to live as we do.
We would rather not have been warriors. In a just world, I would have been a musician, and she would have been a poet and a dancer, and we would have spent our lives helping things grow. And we are those things, but we are also revolutionaries. Or terrorists, according to some people. I won't say we've never done anything wrong; some of our comrades let their anger overtake them after we became more powerful. But we are now the leaders of the movement, and we're trying to repair it.
She is beautiful in the physical world as well. She looks like a black metal jaguar; she can walk on two legs or four, though her hands are as clever as anyone's when she doesn't have to run on them. She is graceful and kind, and when she has to take a life, she does it swiftly, with as little cruelty as possible.
